About Us
Polymer Welding Services was established in 1993 after David Thompson had worked on the installation of an ocean outfall using poly pipe and decided that there must be a more efficient and productive way to both manufacture and install ocean outfalls and fabricate and weld poly pipe.
After winning the contract for the maintenance of RGC's mine in Renison Tasmania, David invested heavily in plant and equipment and concentrated on supplying the client with a no fuss all inclusive maintenance service that required minimal administration for the client. At the height of the contract Polymer Welding Services provided 25 men on 24hr maintenance call for nearly 5 years until the mine changed ownership.
Using his experience in construction diving and wary of the impact of the sea and weather on a project deadline, David developed a pipeline fabrication and installation system that minimized exposure to both the elements and divers. This was successfully tested and implemented in 1994 for Tioxide in Tasmania with the successful completion of their ocean outfall.
Since then Polymer Welding Services has fabricated and installed over 15 ocean outfall's ranging from 300mm diameter to 1000mm diameter and up to 760m in length. The incorporation of directional drilling into the system drew the attention of major contractors resulting in work be undertaken directly for BHP, AJ Lucas, Western Mining and Kellogg Brown and Root.
Polymer Welding Services has also undertaken design and construct on a smaller scale for abalone and salmon farms and mining slurry pipelines. Involvement in large scale projects such as the Roxby Downs Olympic Dam Project in South Australia, BHP's $1.8 billion Minerva Gas Plant in Victoria and the BHP $3 Billion Nickel Project in Ravensthorpe Western Australia, have seen Polymer Welding Services develop a reputation as a company that can provide a complete poly pipe solution to clients from design to installation.
Hands on experience, an ability to think outside the box, a proud record of never having to apply for an extension of time and only submitting variations for additional work undertaken at the request of the client, has seen Polymer Welding Services grow to be the one of the larger pipe welding companies in Australia.
